Yasukuni Shrine

Yasukuni Shrine

Japan’s largest shrine that deifies andcommemorates those who died in its imperialistic conquests during WWII

A symbol of Japan’s militarism that honors the wardead, including Class-A criminals

The shrine is a frequent source of tension betweenJapan and the countries invaded by Japan.

Yoshida Shoin (1830 - 1859), the first manenshrined at Yasukuni

Yasukuni Shrine was established to commemoratehim.

He taught Japan’s next-generation leaders theSeikanron (Feasibility of Conquering Korea).

“Honor the emperor by conquering Korea andreducing it to a tributary state.”

“Advance to mainland Asia by taking Korea as afoothold.”

“Conquering Korea shall create a great future forJapan.”

Japanese leaders took his lesson to heart.

One of those leaders was Japan’s four-time primeminister, Ito Hirobumi (1841-1909).

He led Japan’s invasion of Asia and forced Koreato sign the Eulsa protectorate treaty.

He also dethroned King Gojong for sending secretenvoys to the Hague.

There was a key mindset that Yoshida Shoinemphasized.

shisei (至誠) = to achieve, sincerity

Ultimate sincerity

Shoin’s lesson was to commit fully to achievingambitions.

His ambition was evident in the Seikanron.

His ambition led Japan to an imperialist war, bringingtragedies to Asia.

The imperialistic ambition is still alive in thehearts of Japanese leaders today.

Shinzo Abe, 96th Prime Minister ofJapan (in office since December 2012)

Guess where he first visited once he took office.

Shoin Shrine in the city of Hagi in YamaguchiPrefecture, Japan

Abe highly respects Yoshida Shoin.

His lifetime dream is to follow Shoin’s ambition.

His motto is also from Shoin’s teaching – shisei(ultimate sincerity).

Then, what is Abe committed to?

Create a great future for Japan in the 21stcentury by spreading Shoin’s teaching to Japanese youth!

This is the neo-Seikanron, the 21stcentury-version of the Seikanron.

Tukamoto Kindergarten in Osaka, Japan, issupported by Abe’s administration.

Every day, children at this kindergarten pledgetheir loyalty to Minister Abe.

“For the emperor!”

“Cheer for the prime minister!”

“Good work passing security legislation!”

“Cheer for the prime minister!”

“Protect our land Takeshima (Japan’s reference toDokdo)!”

“Don’t let Korea and China vilify Japan in theirhistory textbooks!”

Every morning, students at the kindergarten areexpected to pay respect to the portraits of Japan’s emperor and empress.

The kindergarten is instilling ultra-nationalismand hatred toward Korea into children’s minds.

On March 31, 2017, the Abe administration approvedthe use of the Imperial Rescript on Education (IRE), such as the above, inschool textbooks.

The 21st-century version of the Seikanronis now being realized in Japan’s school textbooks.

April 1949

Japan introduced the governmental textbookauthorization system.

April 3, 2001

Authorized eight textbooks, including a textbookby the Japanese Society for History Textbook Reform that glorifies Japan’sinvasion of Asia.

July 14, 2008

Included Japan’s sovereignty claim over Dokdo inthe official middle school educational guidelines.

March 30, 2010

Authorized 5th grade social studies textbooksthat describe Dokdo as Japanese territory.

March 30, 2011

Authorized 17 middle school textbooks, 14 of whichdescribe Dokdo as Japanese territory.

March 26, 2013

Authorized 21 high school social studies textbooks,15 of which describe Dokdo as Japanese territory.

April 6, 2015

Among 18 middle school geography, social studies, and history textbooks, 15 describe Dokdo as “an inherent part of the territoryof Japan” and 13 describe it as “illegally occupied by South Korea.”

March 18, 2016

Among 35 high school social studies textbooks, 27assert that Dokdo is “an inherent part of the territory of Japan” and “isillegally occupied by South Korea.”

March 26, 2019

Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports,Science and Technology authorized 12 elementary school social studies textbooksthat describe Dokdo as “an inherent part of the territory of Japan” and“illegally occupied by South Korea.”

For the last 18 years, Japan has been distortingand glorifying its imperialistic past in its school textbooks.

So far, Japan has succeeded in adding itssovereignty claim over Dokdo in textbooks for all elementary, middle, and highschools.

Shinzo Abe has been successful in realizingYoshida Shoin’s ambition.

In the 19th century, Shoin’s Seikanronplanted the seeds for Japan’s invasion of Korea and Asia.

In the 21st century, Abe’sneo-Seikanron is raising concerns for Asia.

We must stop the revival of Japan’s militarism.

To protect peace in Asia, we must raise ourvoices.

We can borrow wisdom from a respected Koreanfreedom fighter.

Ahn Jung-geun (1879-1910)’s theory on Peace inAsia

Ahn dreamed of creating a peaceful Asian unity, 50years earlier than the European Union.

He expected that learning each other’s languagewould strengthen the bond between the people of Korea, China, and Japan.

He hoped that the strengthened bond would helpbusiness cooperation between the countries.

Eventually, the need for dominance would diminishand other Asian countries would join, ultimately leading to a peaceful Asian unity.

Our ambition is to follow Ahn Jung-geun’s visionby building sincere friendships with people across the world.

We want to build an Asia peace network that the sevenbillion people of the world can join.

VANK is committed to preventing Japan’simperialism from reviving.

Together, we will build a path to peace in Asia.

Let’s work together to promote Dokdo and protectpeace in Asia!

We build a peaceful Asia!
