World War II (1939 – 1945)
Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan waged the biggest war in human history, taking the lives of 50 million people.

Germany started the Second World War in Europe.

In just 41 days, Germany conquered 2/3 of France.

French General Charles de Gaulle flew to London.

He went on the radio to appeal to the people to fight back against Germany.

De Gaulle established a government in exile called “Free France.”

In France, the French people organized the Resistance to fight Nazi Germany.

Eventually, Germany surrendered to the Allies, and France became one of the victors.

In Asia, Korea tenaciously fought against Imperial Japan.

In 1910, Japan annexed Korea.

Many Koreans joined the independence movement.

Number of Koreans Imprisoned for Fighting for Independence
 In 1908: 2,424
 In 1943: 23,532

The March 1st Independence Movement (1919)
About two million, 1/10 of the Korean population at the time, participated in the movement to denounce Japan’s occupation and declare Korea’s independence.

The Pacific War (1941-1945) between Japan and the Allies
As part of the Allies, Koreans fought against Japan in China and India.

Establishment of government in exile and independence army
Numerous Korean freedom fighters risked their lives to fight against Japan.

Korea had great military commanders like De Gaulle in France.

Korea had the Korean Liberation Army like the Resistance in France.

Korea had the Korean Provisional Government like Free France.

Despite all of this, why did Korea fail to be recognized as one of the victors?

On August 15, 1945, the emperor of Japan surrendered to the Allies.
On September 8, 1951, the San Francisco Peace Treaty was signed.

However, Korea was not invited to the treaty.

Japan lobbied to exclude Korea from the treaty to avoid paying huge war reparations.

As a result, Korea was not recognized as one of the victors in WWII.

However, it doesn’t change the fact that Koreans fought to defend freedom and peace.

Countless Koreans bled and died for Korea’s independence.

Please remember their sacrifices!

Koreans and the Allies fought together and achieved Korea’s independence.

As long as we remember our freedom fighters, Korea is a great victor, who defeated Imperial Japan.

Dream of Yu Gwan-sun (December 16, 1902 – September 28, 1920)
Cheers for Korean Independence! We declare that Korea is an independent state and that Koreans are a self-governing people.

On March 1, 1919, 33 representatives of the Korean people announced “the Declaration of Korean Independence.”

The declaration was read at Topgol Park in Seoul, Korea.

“We hereby declare that Korea is an independent state and that Koreans are a self-governing people.”

Over two million civilians participated in the nonviolent resistance movement, “the March 1st Independence Movement.”

Yu Gwan-sun, a 15-year-old student, and her friends also participated in the movement.

Japan ordered all schools to temporarily close to prevent students from participating in the movement.

Yu returned home and participated in the independence movement.

Japanese police officers arrested her and killed her parents in front of her.

“I did the right thing to defend my country. Why do you slaughter my people?”

“My only regret is that I have only one life to give to my country.”

Due to brutal torture, Yu Gwan-sun died at age 18.

At such a young age, she scarified her life for her country.

As long as we remember people like her, Korea is a victor in our minds.

Dream of Ahn Jung-geun (September 2, 1879 – March 26, 1910)
We will regain our national independence and build peace in Asia!

The Eulsa Treaty (1905)
Japan deprived Korea of its diplomatic rights.

Ahn Jung-geun organized and led a righteous army to fight against Japan.

He shot and killed Ito Hirobumi, who led the invasion of Korea.

Ahn devoted his life to recovering Korea’s independence and defending peace in Asia.

Ahn Jung-geun left his last words to us.

“I lived on the streets in foreign lands for three years, while fighting for Korea’s independence and peace in Asia. However, I failed to achieve the goal and will soon die in prison. My twenty million fellow Koreans, please work harder, study harder, and recover Korea’s independence. That is my last wish.”

As long as we remember people like him, Korea is a victor in our minds.

Dream of Yun Bong-gil (June 21, 1908 – December 19, 1932)
Make Korea remembered in the minds of people across the world!

The Manchurian Incident (1931)
Japan invaded northeastern China.

After this invasion ended in victory, Imperial Japan’s power soared.

On April 29, 1932, Japan held an event to humiliate the Chinese.

Japan celebrated its victory and the emperor’s birthday in Hongkou Park, Shanghai.

As the Japanese national anthem played toward the end, a 25-year-old man approached the main stage.

He threw a bomb disguised as a water bottle toward the stage, killing a general in the Imperial Japanese Army and officials.

This incident made the front page of major newspapers, including the New York Times in the United States and the Daily Mirror in the United Kingdom.

Japan claimed that it developed the economy and administration of Korea, but Koreans didn’t like Japan.

This news corrected Japan’s false claim that Koreans liked Japan’s presence in Korea.

“A Korean man achieved something that a million Chinese soldiers and 400 million Chinese people couldn’t achieve.” (Chiang Kai-shek, leader of the Chinese Nationalist Party)

Yun Bong-gil, a young Korean man, realized justice for Asians.

On world maps, Korea is marked in the same color as Japan.

The presence of Korea is invisible to the world.

Make Korea remembered in the minds of people across the world!

Then, our effort for independence will not be in vain.

He devoted his life to getting the world to recognize Korea.

As long as we remember people like him, Korea is a victor in our minds.

Dream of Lee Hoe-yeong (March 17, 1867 – November 17, 1932)
Do what you can do and leave the rest to fate!

In 2015, over 10 million Koreans watched the Korean move “Assassination.”

The inspiration for this movie was Lee Hoe-yeong (1867-1932).

Korea sent envoys to The Hague to inform the world of the illegitimacy of the Eulsa Treaty.

After the effort failed, Lee Hoe-yeong fled to China to fight against Japan.

The first thing he did in China was organize armed forces.

Lee founded the Shinheung Military Academy and trained 3,500 independence fighters for 10 years.

He also sponsored a radical independence movement group, Uiyeoldan.

After leaving their home, Lee Hoe-yeong and his brothers spent their entire fortune to support the Korean independence movement.

The Lee brothers couldn’t even eat one proper meal a day.

At age 66, Lee Hoe-yeong was arrested and imprisoned by Japan.

He was brutally tortured and died in prison.

We all die someday. What can we do if we fear that inevitable fate?
Do what you can do and leave the rest to fate. Our effort will not be in vain.

The Lee brothers gave their fortune, power, and even their lives to their country.

Lee Hoe-yeong and his six brothers showed a true example of noblesse oblige.

As long as we remember people like them, Korea is a victor in our minds.

VANK is waiting for your support.

Join our effort to promote the history of the Korean independence movement to the world.

Follow the dream of independence fighters.

Together, we will build the future of Korea and peace in Asia.
