The Truth about the Rising Sun Flag
One day in 2019 …
Imagine how Europeans would react if the German government suddenly claims like the following.
“The design of the swastika has been widely used in Germany for a long time.”
“The swastika flag is employed by the German Army and is widely accepted in the international community.” “Today, the design of the swastika is seen in numerous scenes in daily life of Germany.”
During WWII, many European countries were invaded by Nazi Germany.
The use of the swastika is now strictly banned and punishable by law in many European countries.
So, this scenario is unimaginable in Europe!
However, this unimaginable scenario is happening in Asia.
On May 25, 2019, the Japanese government started a campaign to promote the rising sun flag, a symbol of Imperial Japan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan released a statement that the rising sun flag is part of Japanese culture.
“This design has been widely used in Japan for a long time.” “Today, the design of the Rising Sun Flag is seen in numerous scenes in daily life of Japan.”
“The flags of the Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Ground Self-Defense Force employ the design of the Rising Sun … [These flags] are widely accepted in the international community.”
However, these claims are far from the truth.
It was in 1870 when the rising sun flag was officially adopted by the Japanese Army.
This contradicts the Japanese government’s claim that the design of the rising sun is merely a traditional symbol of Japan.
After the adoption of the rising sun design in 1870 by the Imperial Japanese Army, the Imperial Japanese Navy also adopted it in 1889.
The rising sun flag was used during Japan’s imperialist military campaigns.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan omits the fact that the rising sun flag symbolized its imperialist war.
The swastika symbolizes fascism, an extreme nationalism.
The rising sun is another symbol of fascism that victimized numerous Asians.
With the rising sun flag, Japan invaded and annexed Korea in 1910.
Imperial Japan turned the entire Korean peninsula into a prison.
Numerous Korean freedom fighters were tortured and killed in that prison.
Enormous Korean human and material resources were also exploited.
The Korean language was banned and Korean culture was damaged.
Japan expanded its imperialist war to other Asia-Pacific regions.
Wherever the rising sun flag was planted, there were brutal war crimes, including rape, military sexual slavery, torture, murder, and exploitation.
Under the rising sun flag, over 20 million Asians lost their lives.
The rising sun flag is as condemnable as the swastika.
Why does the rising sun flag still have its presence today?
The Fall of Imperial Japan in WWII
After the war, Japanese top military leaders were found guilty and sentenced to death for their war crimes.
However, in 1955, due to political considerations, the United States freed Emperor Hirohito and some convicted Class-A criminals.
Less than 10 years after the end of WWII, Japan established the Self-Defense Forces that use the Rising Sun Flag.
The rising sun flag has revived as the flag of the Japanese naval forces.
Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and national leaders claim that Japan’s imperialist war wasn’t a crime.
With that logic, the rising sun flag is merely a normal flag of a country, not a symbol of militarism.
However, the rising sun flag symbolizes fascism as much as the swastika.
On July 14, 2018, the anniversary of the French Revolution, the Japan Self-Defense Force was invited to France.
With the flag of a modified rising sun design, Japanese soldiers proudly marched through the street of Paris.
French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted pictures of the event.
Imagine if the Korean government allowed the use of the swastika at an international event.
And the swastika flag flies on the street of Seoul.
How would Europeans feel about that?
On November 22, 2018, VANK received emails from Korean students in Canada.
At a secondary school in the city of Langley, Canada, a teacher put up the rising sun flag in a classroom.
Korean students asked the school to take down the flag, but their request was denied.
After Korean students launched a petition, the school board finally removed the flag.
However, in the email the school sent to parents, there was no apology about the use of the rising sun flag.
Rather, the school board accused Koreans of “editing and censoring history.”
The school board offered no sincere apology or critical reflection.
The international community must be informed of the truth about the rising sun flag.
The rising sun flag is a symbol of militarism, which was used in Japan’s imperialist war.
The rising sun design is as unacceptable as the swastika.
For peace, we will build sincere friendships with people from all around the world.
We will build a network of peace with the seven billion people of the world.
VANK is dedicated to preventing Japanese militarism from reviving.
Our first step is to let the world know about the meaning of the rising sun flag.
The rising sun flag reminds Asians of their painful history.
Let’s join hands to promote peace to prevent another tragedy.
Together, we can stop Japanese militarism from reviving.
Let’s protect peace in Asia and the world.
Together, we can make peace for the world!
